A DJ plays music. An MC runs the night.

This is the distinction that matters most, and most families don’t learn it until it’s too late.

A DJ picks songs. An MC runs the room — the grand entrance, the hora, the games, the montage, the pacing, getting the quiet kids onto the floor and reading when to change gears. At a mitzvah, with a floor full of kids and a room full of adults, the MC is the job. The music is table stakes.

So when you’re shopping, the first thing to find out is who’s actually running your event — and whether that person is the one you’re talking to now.

Before you book

Questions worth asking

• Who’s actually MCing my event? The person on this call, or someone I’ll meet the day of?
• How do you keep the kids on the floor without losing the adults? A real answer here tells you everything.
• What happens during dinner and the slow stretches? Good crews have a plan; weak ones go quiet.
• Have you worked my venue? Knowing the room means knowing where the sound goes and where the floor fills.
• What’s included, and what’s an add-on — in writing?
• Can I see a full night, not just a highlight reel? Ten clips from ten parties hides a lot.
• How do you handle the hora, candle lighting, montage and speeches?
• What’s your backup if gear fails or someone’s sick?

Walk away if

Red flags

• They won’t tell you who’s MCing until closer to the date.
• There’s no written contract naming the team and what’s included.
• They only ever show a sizzle reel — never one full event, start to finish.
• They pressure you to book before any real planning conversation.
• They’re vague on what’s included and wave off the add-on question.

The real test

Both crowds, one night

The hardest part of a mitzvah isn’t the music — it’s serving two crowds at once. The kids want it loud and nonstop. The adults want to hear each other at dinner and still dance later. A crew that only knows how to run a teen dance floor loses the room; one that only plays it safe bores the kids.

The guest of honor is the client for the night. Ask how they’ll be featured, how the shy friends get pulled in, and how the crew makes a thirteen-year-old feel like the room is theirs. That’s the answer that matters.
